VI, VII is pleased to present the work of Eliza Douglas, an artist bridging the worlds of art, music, and fashion.
As French art critic and magazine editor Olivier Zahm puts it: Eliza Douglas is "The face of a new generation—shaping the future of art with a transgressive attitude that disrupts predetermined categories: painting/performance, male/female, art/fashion, individual/collective.
Featuring familiar characters drawn from the magical world of Disney, her works at June are part of an ongoing series that involves “still life” oil paintings of t-shirts with their graphic images and logos torqued after wearing. This series has its origins in the sculpture “Pile,” a heap of cotton t-shirts that the artist first exhibited at Tate in 2019. As Lillian Davies observes in Artforum, when writing about this work, “T-shirts, worn on the body, soaked with sweat, become marked like a loose canvas.”
BIOGRAPHY
Eliza Douglas (b. 1984, USA) lives and works in Berlin and New York.
Recent exhibitions include THE WHITNEY BIENNIAL, VI, VII, Oslo; Notre Morte, Neue Alte Brücke, Frankfurt; Natures mortes, Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Lord of the Fucking Wasteland, Air de Paris, Romainville; Sex, The Art Institute, Chicago, Tate Modern, London (with Anne Imhof); Jewish Museum, New York; Old Tissues Filled with Tears, Schinkel Pavilion, Berlin, and Eliza Douglas Anne Imhof, Galerie Buchholz, New York.
Also a musician and performer she regularly collaborates with German artist Anne Imhof—most recently on Natures mortes on view at Palais de Tokyo (2021). Douglas composed the score, and was a lead performer in this multimedia production, which extended throughout the entire institution, featuring works by over 20 artists alongside objects by Douglas and Imhof. Douglas also co-created the music for and was a performer in Anne Imhof’s Faust, which won the Golden Lion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017.
Other musical collaborations have taken place with Devendra Banhart, Antony and the Johnsons, and Matteah Baim in the 2000s.
As a model, she has worked closely with Vetements and Balenciaga working most recently with the latter on their “Identities” campaign, which she both starred in and was the creative director of.
Douglas’ work is in the collections of Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in France and Kistefos Museum in Jevnaker, Norway. Her work can currently be seen in the group exhibition “Les Pigeons du Square” at Air de Paris.
